Glycated Albumin and HbA1c are index of average glucose over the preceding weeks-to-months. They are the results of glycation when glucose molecules spontaneously react with the amine group of proteins by non-enzymatic reaction. If glucose level remains high, then level of Glycated Albumin and HbA1c increases.

FPG: Measuring the blood glucose at a single point in time.

Glycated Albumin: Measuring the average blood glucose level over the past 2-4 weeks. It is an intermediate marker for glycemic control because of shorter half-life than HbA1c.

HbA1c: Measuring the average blood glucose level over the past 2-4 months as long-term marker.

There was mild decrease in % HbA1c, while % Glycated Albumin decreased markedly after intensive insulin therapy. Glycated Albumin is thought to be more sensitive to short-term fluctuations in glucose level and rapidly confirms treatment efficacy due to half-life. When glycemic control changes shortly by starting or changing of diabetes treatment, Glycated Albumin is a more suitable marker than HbA1c.
